ABA is different at interconnect therapy

Why I Built Interconnect Therapy Differently

Published on July 30th, 2026 | San Francisco's Leading Neuroaffirming Child Therapy Practice

When I became a BCBA over 13 years ago, I believed in the power of ABA, and I still do. But what I believe in loos vastly different than your typical ABA company.

I've had the privilege of working with hundreds of children and families, watching incredible growth happen every day. But over the years, I also realized something important: no two children learn the same way, so why should their therapy look the same? That question stayed with me throughout my career, and eventually it led me to create Interconnect Therapy.

I wanted to build a practice where families didn't have to fit into a system. Instead, the system would fit the family.

One of the biggest reasons we're a private-pay practice is because it gives us the freedom to truly individualize care. Insurance-based therapy often has specific requirements for treatment plans, hours, and documentation. While those guidelines exist for a reason, they don't always reflect what matters most to a family. And, the insurance company never actually meets your child, they use the same blueprint for everyone.

At Interconnect, we start somewhere different.

We ask, "What would make the biggest difference in your child's everyday life?"

For one child, that might be feeling confident joining a birthday party. For another, it could be communicating their needs, navigating big emotions, or building meaningful friendships. Every family comes to us with different hopes, and we believe those hopes should shape therapy.

Another thing that makes Interconnect unique is who your child works with.

Many ABA providers use Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) to provide most direct therapy under the supervision of a BCBA. RBTs do not typically have a college degree, or education specific to behavior therapy. At Interconnect, every session is led by an experienced BCBA, no one else. That means your child is working directly with a graduate-level clinician who can adjust strategies in the moment, recognize subtle learning opportunities, and make thoughtful clinical decisions as they happen.

Because of that experience, we often don't need the intensive therapy schedules that many families expect. Typical ABA companies will prescribe 20-30 hours of ABA each week(!). We believe that thoughtful, individualized therapy can accomplish more than simply increasing the number of hours. Our focus has always been on quality—not quantity. We work with kids from anywhere from 1-3 hour per week, as I feel kids should be spending time with their families, going to extra curricular activities or simply having time to decompress. Squeezing in 20 hours of therapy on top of school feels more stressful, not helpful.

We also believe that the people who spend the most time with your child are the ones who have the greatest impact.

That's why parent coaching isn't an add-on at Interconnect—it's part of every program we offer.

Children don't just need strategies during therapy. They need those same supports at home, in the grocery store, at the playground, during bedtime routines, and everywhere life happens. By partnering closely with parents, we help make progress last long after each session ends.

Most importantly, we believe therapy should feel good. Children deserve to feel safe, respected, and understood. They deserve clinicians who follow their interests, honor their communication, support their regulation, and celebrate who they already are while helping them learn new skills.

That has always been the heart of Interconnect.

When families ask what makes us different, my answer is simple.

We aren't trying to provide more therapy.

We're trying to provide better therapy.

The kind that's personalized instead of standardized.

The kind that's led by experienced clinicians.

The kind that partners with parents.

And the kind that focuses on meaningful changes that families actually notice in everyday life.

After more than 13 years in this field, I've learned that the most meaningful outcomes don't always show up on a graph. They show up when a family tells us dinner is easier, mornings are calmer, their child is making friends, or they're finally feeling hopeful again.

That's the kind of progress we'll always measure. And that's the kind of ABA we believe every family deserves.

Thanks for being here!
